Artist Statement | “When Champions Rise”

"These 12 athletes from around the world are champions of humanity and diversity. Men and women who have faced, sacrificed and overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. All of whom continue to use their own voice and platforms as athletes to amplify the voices of others (sometimes at great risk to their personal safety) whether it be on topics of human rights, racial injustice, justice for Indigenous, genocide, equality, education, women’s rights, LGBTQ2S+ etc. Their individual stories of perseverance, soul-force and grit are ever-inspiring. To have them painted together as a collective is something super special. (L-R) Arian Foster, Ethan Bear, Renee Montgomery, Adam Jones, Jewell Loyd, Gus Kenworthy, Cori “Coco” Gauff, Lisa Mason, Enes Kanter, Sydney Leroux, Awak Kuier and Justin Fashanu."
